I was able to do this.  What I did was remove the Finder from my 3.5"
boot disk and instead installed it on the server.  You don't need the
Finder to connect to the server.  When the program launcher comes up,
open the server and launch Finder from there.

Or you can install the boot cdev (don't know the exact name, but its
icon is a boot, like you put on your foot) and tell it to run Finder
from the server on startup.  You can also have your disk automatically
log into the server, so you'd start up quickly with all your support
files on your 3.5" and Finder on the server.

And if you are running a new enough version of AppleShare.  Also, this
makes your Mac pretty much useless for anything but serving files to the
GS.

Is there any way to boot the GS on a 3.5" disk, have it do everything
needed to open up the server, and then somehow trick it after that to
look for tools, cdevs, das, etc. on the server rather than on the boot
disk?  The actual booting is done on the 3.5", but the system software
run entirely on the server after this, without tying up the Mac with
AppleShare.
