I don't know if there was much 'discussion', as such.
I bought a SuperDrive card shortly after it was released, and I asked
the Apple people why support for RAM5 wasn't included, since putting a
SuperDrive card in slot 5 prevents the use of the internal SmartPort
(including RAM5 and ROM5). I can't remember what their reasons were; I
think it was either lack of ROM space or lack of time.
My solution to the problem was to put the SuperDrive card in another
slot (6 in my case). I also left my Apple 3.5 Drive connected to the
IIgs disk port, because some IIgs software (FTA stuff, ZZCopy, Copy
II+ 3.5" Bit Copy, and some games) only works with a 3.5" drive on the
built-in drive port.
(As a result, I have four SmartPort-compatible interfaces in my ROM 3
IIgs: PC Transporter in 7, SuperDrive in 6, IIgs SmartPort in 5, Apple
HS SCSI card in 4.)
