Hello,
I recently was given (!) a functioning Apple II system (either a II+ or
just a straigt II, I can't tell). I am slowly learning what I can
about this legendary machine, but I need help with identifying or
getting info on some the cards installed. Any info at all will be
appreciated, including programming info and pointers to information
in books, etc.
Here's the cards I have:
1. Hayes Micromodem II - Seems to date from 1982 going on the numbers
stamped on the ic's. I am told this used an acoustic coupler, which I
don't have. Are these couplers still available? Can I make my own?
2. An 80-column card, mfd. by Videx. circa 1980. This one works if I
give the command pr#3 (installed in slot 3) after booting. Has its own
separate video output jack, to which I must switch the monitor after going
into 80-col mode. Doesnt seem to do graphics. Has a couple of EPROMS
and 4 2114 RAM chips on the card. Is there any way to cause the II to
switch to 80-column mode automatically?
3. 16K RAM exp. card, mfd. by Andromeda Comp. Systems, circa 1980. This
installs in slot 0, and connects to the left-most RAM IC socket in
bank 3 on the motherboard. The ram chip which normally occupies that
particular socket is installed on this card. There is also a small toggle
switch on the rear edge of the card. I have no idea how this card works,
as the Ram on the motherboard already is maxed out (48k). Is this some
kind of early bank-swithced ram system?
4. AE-Z-80 plus card, mfd. by Applied Engineering around 1983. This to
me is the most intriguing card of the bunch. I was told it was for running
CPM, but have no software or docs on it. This is a very small card and
has the cpu, an LED (labelled "working"), and some glue logic on it. It
does not appear to have any memory installed (no RAM or ROM) on the card,
nor are there any sockets for such. Id REALLY like to tinker with this
little card!
5. Grappler interface, mfd. by Orange Micro. This appears to be a
parallel printer interface, but Im not sure how to get it to work. It's
fairly simple; just some logic chips and an EPROM (labelled "EPS-1").
The system came with very little software and even less documentation.
(Hey, it was free!) I do have one book, _Apple_II_User's_Guide_ by
Lon Poole, et al, which covers Applesoft and DOS pretty well, but that's
it. I also have several disks with games, some diskcopy software, and
even a legit copy of printshop (or printmaster?).
Anyway thanks for reading this far. Replies via email please, since
I can't see a real need to post followups to the net.
Thanks!
Robert
