Pro Grappler with Tape Drive?

I was thinking about using a Pro-Grappler that I just picked up with
an IBM parallel port tape drive.  Unfortunately, the manual _seems_
to indicate that the Pro-Grappler can only be used for output, not
input.

Does anyone have experience with this, and can verify if input functions
are provided?  (The manual isn't very informative.)

(Yes, I realize that even if the hardware permits it that I still have
a software problem.)
