AppleII+ Proterm and Networker

I am interested in getting my ][+ communications-ready (communicable?).
I have this "Networker" 300 baud internal modem. The software that came
with it (Netmaster, I think) doesn't seem that great. Proterm seems to
be a very popular comm package in the Apple][ community.

I currently have only my 2 Disk][ drives and DOS 3.3. Will Proterm work
in that environment, or must I upgrade? I.e. is ProDOS required?

Can Proterm work w/o a hard disk?

Does Proterm support the Networker modem?

Can anyone recommend other software for the Networker?

Is the Networker modem a piece of junk?

As you can see, I am just piddling around with this stuff for fun/learning.
So far it has been all garage sale purchases. If I was really serious, I
would just go out and buy the latest stuff, but I am enjoying the process of
working my way through this stuff without spending a lot of money, and
putting something together piece by piece.

Either that or I am just:
a) a cheapskate
b) trying to recapture youth by living 10 years in the past
c) hanging around 8-bit/48KB so as not to become jaded by the 32-bit/64MB
POWERstation I use at work.
