Well, just having discovered Lynx yesterday, someone else may be able to
offer a better explanation, but I'll try anyway.
Lynx is similar to Mosaic, except that is is a text based interface that is
naviagted by arrow keys. It serves as a "front end" to World Wide Web. But,
it is far ranging, and Lynx can be used to ftp, telnet or gopher, or to word
it slightly differently, it can be used in place of all those other net
tools.
When you first access Lynx, you're presented with a text document that
almost looks like a menu, but it's not a menu in the traditional sense.
Certain words or phrases are shown in inverse, and those are linked. The
link could be to the next page of the document, or it could be half a world
away.
The Lynx home page looks like this:
INFORMATION SOURCES ABOUT AND FOR WWW
* For a description of WWW choose Web Overview
* About the WWW Information Sharing project
* WWW Information By Subject
* WWW Information By Type
Except that when you look at it live, things like WWW Information by Subject
is inversed. Use your down arrow key to land on that line, and then use your
right arrow key to access the 'link'. That particular link brings up a whole
list of subjects at Info.Cern.
Once you have Lynx running, it should take very long to figure out how to do
it. At the bottom of the screen, there's also some commands, so that 'S'
lets you perform a search. At some point, I had a list of ftp sites up, and
hit 's', and entered 'cco' and about a second or three later, I was
connected to caltech.
On my system, I just use the shell and type the word Lynx.
Obviously, only people who can use net tools like ftp, telnet, etc can use
Lynx. If it's not on your system yet, demand it. It'll let you naviage the
net without ever having to type a command. |navigate
It's awesome. It's mind blowing. Or, in the words of B and B, it's cooool!
