The Apple II was/is not "a dead end loser." The Vic 20 was/is not "cheap
garbage." If he thinks that Commodore wasn't interested in improving the
6502, then I wonder how he would explain the 6510 (in the C64), the 7501 (in
the plus/4 and C16), the 8502 (in the C128), and the CSG65CF02 (in the
unreleased C65)? They may not all be great improvements, although the 8502
could run at 2 Mhz, and the CSG65CF02 could run at 3.54 MHz, but obviously
Commodore was doing something with the 6502.
Anyway, he was wrong then, so he's probably wrong now.
