I don't use Z-Link.  :)

However, from what you're describing, it sounds that Z-Link is entering
a loop waiting for the modem to say it is ready to receive a character.
This would cause problems if Z-Link is monitoring hardware handshaking
lines and/or if you are using an improperly wired cable between the
modem and the Apple //c.

If possible, make sure that Z-Link isn't using hardware handshaking, (if
it supports it--?), and disable any hardware handshaking from the modem.

I don't know what modem you are using (you didn't mention it), but the
Hayes AT commands which should handle this are documented in my GVC
External Super Modem manual.  They are as follows:

	&C0 == carrier detect signal is always high
	&D0 == ignore DTR state changes
	&S0 == DSR remains on all the time
