I have read about the FREE upgrade for early apple //c's in a number
of postings. My //c had problems working with a modem at more than
1200 baud. When I called several apple dealers about fixing the
problem I was firmly told "Sorry, We no longer do service any apple
//'s." I was told by the fellow on the Washington Apple PI hotline
that no area dealer works on the //'c. Are apple dealers required
to fix my old //c? Is there a dealer that will still do the
free upgrade? Is there a phone number/e-mail/snail-mail address
at apple that I could contact to get this fixed? Thanks for any
help.

Paul Hamersley,

Hello, remember me? (Dumpling 64 fan --- I sold you several older Hayes
modems.
Regarding the IIc upgrade, my local dealer here is still doing it. I have
had five IICs upgraded in the past few months. No problem.
It is in Greenville, 40 miles from here. I drive to Greenville about once
every 2-3 weeks. It takes them 3 weeks to order and receive the replacement
motherboard.
Make sure first that yours is not already upgraded. The serial number
sticker on the bottom outer casing should be below 500000 (with letters mixed
in).
If you ship it here, and also pay for the return shipping, I will drop it for
upgrading. Whole sequence could take 7 weeks (two trips there, plus the 3 weeks
for them to get the upgraded unidisk 3.5 motherboard.

The way to tell if you have the older board is to go to the basic prompt ]
then type PRINT PEEK (64447) followed by retyurn. If you get 255, then you do
have the ungradable original IIc.

Also, try the self-test: At power-up, hold down both apple keys. If you
get arching verical lines on the screen, then you have the original IIc,
eligible for the upgrade. If you get a checkerboard self-test pattern that
after a minute says SYSTEM OK, then you are already upgraded.

If you want me to do this, then just send the CPU. ~Power supply or monitor
are not needed. sebugg
