Changing the ROM will not help with the modem speed.  This requires
the motherboard to be replaced.

The revised ROM will give you access to a UniDisk 3.5, but _not_ an
Apple 3.5 Drive, which is the standard 800k drive used on the IIgs
and Macintosh.  The UniDisk 3.5 is an older drive which has its own
microprocessor and uses the SmartPort protocol to communicate with the
computer.

The revised ROM is available from Alltech Electronics.  You have to
make a modification to the original motherboard to use the revised
ROM: an option marker needs to be cut and another one soldered.

Once you have made this modification, the original ROM cannot be used.

The ROM upgrade (and motherboard swap) should be reasonably cheap.
I'd recommend getting it done properly, by your Apple dealer.
