Help needed with joystick

My //e's joystick just started acting flaky:  Whenever I press one of the
joystick buttons, PDL(0) and PDL(1) increase.  Pressing both buttons
simultaneously causes twice and increase.  The joystick works fine on
another //e and another joystick displays the same behavior on the flaky
//e.  Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
