Joe,
  the procedure is to ignore the people who are giving you the crap. The
notion that commercial advertising is prohibited on the internet is false.
It was the case that some portions of the internet owned by the government
were supposed to be free from any use for a commercial purpose but even
that restriction was lifted recently. So go ahead and plug your newsletter.
The vast majority of us here appreciate the work you are doing for the
Apple II community and you are not doing anything wrong by advertising it.
