Some drives, especially those used on mid-range machines where there are many
drives, have either a "Spinup on Command" setting or a "Spinup in 16 X SCSI
Address Seconds" setting. These are both to counter startup surge currents
where there might be dozens of drives all running off the same system.
Best way out is to ask Maxtor.
One other thing... if your drive's terminators are not getting power they can stop spinup by holding the RESET line on the SCSI interface
low. I've had this happen with a huge IBM SCSI drive. It needed terminator
power before it would spinup.
