It pretty much depend on how "noisy" your environment is - I've run
a serial cable 500 feet from my GS before, and it worked fine.
Theoretical limit is (was?) supposed to be about 50 feet, so you should
be covered fine.
as for the switch box - try Alltech Electronics 800 995 7773
