Most of the people seems to suggest that we should put the finder extensions
in System.Setup because it will make reloading of Finder faster.
In my case, I have many inits/das/cdevs. During bootup, if all my finder
extensions are in System.Setup, two rows of icons will be filled.
But if I put ALL my finder extensions in System.Setup, weird things started
to pop up, such as:
1) Random crashes here and there.
2) Text Edit is all mess up. There are a lot of garbage in the text window.
This not only occurs outside Finder, but in Finder (when using ShadowWrite
or EGOed).
But the problems will go away by itself if I place all my finder extensions in
FinderExtras. But it takes very long to reload the Finder, so I move some
of the finder extensions back, and this seems to be OK depends on what I move
back.
I found that (no proof given, just some observation that might be wrong)
the system is more stable if the bigger finder extensions (> 30K) are in
FinderExtras than if they are in System.Setup.
So if you have a very unstable System 6, maybe before you disable your
favorite finder extensions, give this idea a shot. Put them in FinderExtras
and see whether it runs better. Then move some back to System.Setup if you
think the Finder is taking too much time in reloading.
