Imagewriter I

I have an Imagewriter I printer that has a problem.  It prints in english then
something else, condensed, normal, etc.  I described this to my (so called)
Apple dealer and he told me that the main board sounds like it is bad and he
wanted somewhere in the neighborhood of $200+ for the board and then labor.  He
is the same guy who tried to sell me the Apple //e enhancement chips for $80 a
pop ($80x3).  What I want to know is if there is a better place to try and get
this fixed, if there is some type if peripherial software that can check out
printers, and so on.  I have seen posts on companies who do work on the Apple
// line but cannot access info from the past.  Any help would be appreciated. 
I wanted to give this to a friend but am not going to spend $300 to get it
