Question: Appleworks

Hi, I've got an unenhanced 2e with a Ramworks II (1.5M) board and
a McDemon (or McSpeed Demon) 3Mhertz speed up card. With the
Ramworks board came a disk with a program called "AppleWorks
Desktop Expander". What is does is modify AW to be able to access
the Ramworks memory. The desktop expander says it's supposed to
work with AW versions 1.0-1.2+. I've tried it on versions 1.1, 1.2,
and 2.0. It died on v2.0.

The problem comes when I try to use the modified AW program. It
seems to work fine up until I try to do a page calculate (which
includes trying to print). Most times the program begins to
count. The number of pages it counts before failing isn't always
the same, for the same file. In any case, the counting ends abruptly.
Either junk appears and everything freezes or the machine beeps and
cancels to the monitor prompt "*". I primarily use AW for word-
processing and this has mostly occured with files exceeding ten pages
in length. There's 1107k on the desktop.

I've tried using the Ramworks desktop expander program on all the
versions of AppleWorks I had, no luck. I also ran a memory test on
the Ramworks board (just in case). Pulling the speed up card caused
AW to die immediately when I tried to use the page calculate function.

I hope that explained the circumstances well enough. My guess is that
the modified AW program is looking for my ][e to be enhanced. Either
that or I need to find a patch for the Desktop Expander program. If
it's the enhancement I need, can anyone recommend a good place to order
a kit? Last time I was thinking of upgrading I tried the local Apple
dealer. Not only did they want to do it for me, they wanted to keep my
old chips. I've had this machine for 10 years, if anyone's going to
rip it apart, it's going to be me. Besides, I may need the old chips
if I wanted to run old software (better to be safe..).

While I'm at it, anyone know how to get Copy2 v8.2 to recognize the
ramdisk of the Ramworks II board? Copy2 says it's there but won't
access the ramdisk.

Last question, honest. I've an old Franklin 5.25" drive that's been
out of commission for as long as I've had it. The drive comes on
when accessed but doesn't read from the disk (doesn't even sound
like the head's moving). Are there any online docs that may help me
deduce the problem? I was going to try to replace the chips, but
the drive's old and everything's sodered. I'm not even sure which
of the eight chips on the board I'd need to have replaced.
