Sounds like your procedure is OK except for one thing. When you use
DeskZap to change the file type, you are not really changing the file at
all, just the directory attributes. I may not be using the correct
technical terms here, but you get the idea. Your file is still an
AppleWorks file even though listed in the directory as a text file. The
garbage characters are the AppleWorks stuff. What you need to do is got
your files back into Appleworks and print them to disk as a text file.
You could also use the Proterm editor to load the AppleWorks file and
then save it as a text file.
