Re: Proline

mdavis@crash.cts.com (Morgan Davis), saw reply that needed
answering. It was called "Re: Proline":

My mistake. Yes, someone has misinformed me.

Morgan - This message is coming to you from a FutureNet system right now.
-ANYTHING- that you see on the Internet in the *.*.fnet.org
domain is on the FutureNet. FutureNet=METAL. The "soon" is now.
There exists a freeware package for FutureVision that allows the
Sysop to connect DIRECTLY to a UUCP feed and exchange Mail/News.
The FutureVision 4.0xev version is already designed to handle
Internet E-mail and Usenet seamlessly. This package installs in
1 minute and can be running with a simple edit to 2 text files.

Anyone that wants it can E-mail me and I'll send them the archive.

-THIS- Includes the IIne net as well, which, due to some software
gateways, FutureNet will be annexing under it's wing. It is VERY
primitive networking (IIne Net that is) but Cleveland will have a
IIne "server" for the rest of the Net.

>(I have to shamelessly inform those who don't already know, but ProLine
>systems have been exchanging Internet mail and news since 1985, before
>we even called it the "Internet").

And before METAL was even in existance! :) Why hasn't ACOS done anything to
expand it's connectivity? ProLine is a good package. UMDSS is a WELL thought
out and written exchange program. I wouldn't be ashamed of them either!

MY only beef with UMDSS is that it is not "EASY" to set it up. Yes, it comes
with step by step instructions, but even my UUCP administrator told me he
wouldn't take the time to set it up. He told me, instead, that I should write
a simple package that would allow the administrator to simply establish a new
UUCP feed with a certain login shell. That is exactly what I did. It's small,
compact, keeps logs and will work on ANYTHING that supports

1. /bin/sh
2. sb/rb

I would like to point out that the name of my Freeware package for METAL is
MTS. It is a project that Shane Zatezalo and I have worked on spurtingly for
the past few years. And now, it is in full swing (Xmas break!) and nearing a
completed "release" stage. Shane is developing a seperate package, which I am
not sure will be released. That is something that will have to be discussed
with him.

I have been pulling Internet E-mail for over a year now and Usenet for just
about a month. NO problems other than minor cosmetic problems that were
oversites on my part. And the great thing about our package is that ALL the
FutureNet sites have access to the Internet as WELL through the two (or as
many as we like) UUCP gateways. Usenet conferences can be distributed via
normal FutureNet channels. (I distribute the entire comp.sys.apple2 hierarchy
to the other 2 Cleveland futurenet sites - ss.cleve.fnet.org and
clinic.cleve.fnet.org).

The Usenet feeds use a Direct routing scheme which assures that the cost of
a feed getting accross the network doesn't get passed on to other sysops.

And we do NOT charge any kind of fees for this access. The only fee that the
Sysop would have to absorb to get Internet E-mail and Usenet is..

1. The cost of a UUCP feed (If any)
2. The cost of a direct call to a FutureVision UUCP gateway stite (If any)
