You need to find out how they're encoded-- most likely, they're uuencoded.  
I think GScii+ 2.3 will uudecode (someone correct me if I'm wrong), but if 
not, whatever system you're using FTP on may have the uudecode utility (it 
definitely will if its a Unix system).
