Well, the firts problem is getting the picture in a good IIGS format.
You can convert the GIF to IIGS format, but usually, the colors are not
optimized for the IIGS's desktop patterns, usually 640x200x4 (4 colors that
are dithered to a mediocre color format). To get your GIF into such a format,
there are programs such as SHRConvert (shareware, dated), SuperConvert
(published, up to date), and other ones that I don't know about, such as
SecondChance and possibly a few others.
Once you have a standard IIGS picture, it's rather easy to put it in the
background. There are a number of both inits and CDevs that will take a
picture and put it in the background. Look around ftp sites; my recommendations
are the DeckColor CDev (Jesus-A-Ware) and the one SoftDisk published recently
on SD-GS #50. I'd prefer the Softdisk one because it contains a number of
patterns (not just 8x8; some patterns are 64x64, and look quite nice) that
do look good in the background.
