Re: Aggrevation = Ftp.apple.com = System6.0.1!

I too have downloaded the files from bric-a-brac and never had any
problems with them. I HAVE found though that you have got to make
sure whatever system it is you are downloading them onto does not
muck around with the files at all. Otherwise you will never ever
get the things to work.

For example (it took me three tries to download everything correctly
so maybe this will help someone else), my first attempt was with
FTP and I did not set the BINARY option. Everything transferred
correctly still, but FTP had converted all CR/LF to CR. Not good.
Just changing those two characters into a single character threw off
the entire encoding scheme.
My second try was on a Macintosh. I downloaded the files to a Mac
(using FTP) and then used Apple File Exchange. Well, it turns
out that Apple File Exchange does some conversion no matter WHAT
you tell it to do. I say this because I tried four times to use
Apple File Exchange to just move the files over to a ProDOS diskette
and every time I'd get that the files were bad once they were on
the //gs.
My third try was using Fetch. I set Fetch to binary
and downloaded the files from bric-a-brac. I then simply placed
the files onto Macintosh formatted diskettes, took them home, and
used the previous version of the //gs system (System 6.0) to read
the diskettes. Everything worked fine. :)

The morale of the story? Do as little conversion of the files as
you possibly can. The more converting you do, the more likely it
is that something will go wrong.
