I recently bought a non-functioning IIc. I decided to open it up and
see what I might be able to see, and lo and behold, this thing has a
memory expansion card in it that I need some information on.
It is an Applied Engineering Z-Ram card, not Z-Ram Ultra, just Z-Ram.
The printing on the card gives it a copyright of 1985 and says it is
"Rev B". It has 256k soldered on and sockets for another 256k.
There is one chip that has "Z80c" lettered on in white. I guess this
gives a IIc the ability to run CP/M programs, although I don't know
why you would want to. Rather than have the CPU and MMU chips in
sockets right over where they are on the motherboard, the MMU chip is
offset by about half the width of the chip and the CPU chip is at the
back edge of the board. There is a wire that comes off of one of the
traces in the upper right region of the board and connects to the
motherboard under the drive.
I would like to install this in a IIc I currently own. But, I need
to know about that wire coming off the thing. What is it for? Is it
necessary? Do I have to solder the thing onto the motherboard of my
working IIc just to find out if the card even works? If so, where do
I solder it? (Since the IIc this came out of is not working, I don't
trust the previous placement)
If anybody has experience with this hardware, or has any
documentation, I would like to talk to you. Any help is greatly
appreciated!
