Greetings,
Recently, I posted several questions in this area requesting
information about CD-ROM and the Apple //e and IIGS, hoping to provide our
Apple II User Group members with some relevant information. Some of you
replied via E-mail, and as requested by Brian Tao, I've summarized your
replies and am posting them here. Although I haven't given proper credit to
the authors, I have separated their resposes with the "*" character.
Thankyou all for your replies and suggestions.
[please note I no longer have an InterNet address here at mindlink! Try
Pro.sol. Better Apple II support there -- al]

! Right here on the net! Or get Quality Computers II Alive magizine &
catalog
! (give em' a call at 800-777-ENHAnce.) Mag is $30! grind.isca.uiowa.edu).
Give it 6 months - a year..

! Should work. Most CDs use the High-Serria format, which the GS can read,
along with ! Macs, etc.

GS.
! What do you mean? The user interface? ;) If you want to try an hook up a
CD
! to a /e, it can be done through SCSI, but I don't think there is any SW
that
! will let you actually READ anything..

! I don't think you can use a CD-ROM on a IIe. (Someone correct me if I'm
! wrong). You can however, use a CD-ROM on a IIGS with a Apple SCSI card &
! System 6.0.1. As far as IIGS CD's go, there is the System 6 Gold (from
! what I've heard) & Michigan's Apple II FTP site is currently deciding
! wether or not to publish a Apple II CD. I imagine you could also use Mac
! HFS CD's on a IIGS, ex: with AudioZap, you could import MAC sound (even
! tho it's in a resource).

! I am using an Apple CD-SC CD-ROM on my GS with a RamFast SCSI card.
It
! works OK with an old Rev C Apple SCSI, too. The CD-Remote NDA will not work
! with the RamFast card so I can't play music CDs while I work...
! There is a lot of stuff out there on CD-ROM; very little is Apple II
specific.
! However, I can use all and any text, graphic (especially GIF) or
! readsheet files I come across on alien CD-ROMs. CD-ROM drives are
! getting cheaper by the hour; probably because of the new multi-session,
dual speed
! models coming onto the market. I was tempted to buy a bare drive for A$280
last
! weekend, just to replace the flakey mechanism in my drive.
! Let me know what you decide...
