Ever since installing Total Control 2.1, DoubleData 2.0, Ultra 4.2, etc,
my AppleWorks 3.0 (or 3.5 as I like to think of it) really does not like
being run from GS/OS, and I can rely on it crashing or at least behaving
badly at least 50% of the time.
Since the release of GS/OS 6.0.1 there has been a simple solution: if
you're in the Finder and you want to run AW4.0, Restart the computer
through the normal shutdown dialog, and as soon as the bell sounds press
the '8' key. You boot into ProDOS 8 and run AppleWorks from there. It's
just as quick, there are no problems with rogue NDAs, CDevs, etc, and you
have more memory available to you.
I have ProSel 8 installed on the Main Directory of my hard disk with
AppleWorks listed as the first program, so the whole process is almost
completely seamless - just a few presses of the Return key.
The only thing you lose out on is the ability to use CDAs, but this has
never been a problem for me personally, since most of what I would use
any CDAs for is covered by some AppleWorks or UM function anyway.
