You'd need to get some prototypes to those who are willing to help 
with programming...

DSP is pretty general purpose, once you have the interface done, then people
can write all sorts of cool stuff for it.

DSP are the cheapest performance/price general processors...  Not dirt
cheap of course...  Probably contact your local Motorola/TI/AT&T to get
some chip info and stuff.

I'm sure they have some DSP related newsgroups.  You should be able to find
lots of develper related info's there.  Lots of developement tools are
availalbe now days, which is why DSPs are getting very popular.
