Flatbed Scanner Question

I have a question for all you GS gurus:
 
Will any SCSI flatbed scanner work with APPLESCAN.GS software, or is it
like
the CD-ROM player NDA - requires the Apple flavor?
 
I ask, cuz while I can get the Apple flatbed for about $400, there are 
others out there that support color (I know AppleScan.GS doesn't, but
somebody may update the drivers in the future) and are faster..AND cost
about the same (give or take a few $$ here and there)
 
so... what do you think, sirs?
