Using Apple IIc To Access Internet

I have an old Apple IIc which I would like to use in addition to my PC to
connect to the Internet.  It is connected to a Hayes Smartmodem 2400 external,
and I have both the Apple Access Program (very old software) and a demo
disk of Proterm 3.0.

When testing the connections out today, I found I could not access the
news groups or read mail without assorted characters appearing in front of
the lines of type, and in the case of the newsgroups, a total inability to
read the messages.

The software has options for some various terminal settings, including
DEC VT-100, DEC VT-52, and some others.

Is it possible to use this setup and software to connect to 
the Internet and my Unix account at Rutgers properly?

Any suggestions or assistance is MUCH appreciated!
