I think it's important to add a suffix to the name to indicate what
kind of file it is. Furthermore, Unix allows long filenames (much
greater than 15 characters). If you don't like the name of the file
you just FTP'd, rename it. I think the files on the FTP server should
be as descriptive as possible (without going ballistic). Descriptive
2 or 3 letter suffixes are definitely useful.
As Tim Savage pointed out, it's nice to have a bit of a description
before you download something. I would ask the FTP site administrator
if it would be possible to have a INDEX or DESCRIPTION file in each
directory briefly describing each file (1 or 2 lines). This does
require a bit of work, but could be very useful to many people.
