//c Upgrade

Hello...I'm in the process of upgrading my old Apple //c (with first edition
ROM (FF) and 5.25" drive) and I have a few questions:

1. Reading through these files, I learned that, in order to get a Modem
	to work at anything >300 baud, I needed a dealer-installed //c upgrade.
I called our local dealer (who still supports the // line!), and
was told that what I need is a ROM upgrade. Now, I was under the
impression that the entire motherboard needed to be swapped - can
anyone here clarify this for me?
2. With this dealer-installed upgrade, will I be able to buy a 3.5" disk drive
that I can just "plug and play", or will I need some extra fiddling
with the Motherboard to do so?
3. I currently only have 128K of RAM, and AppleWorks 4.0 recommends at least
256K. I was surprised to find a company that offers a 1 MB RAM
upgrade for $149, but they need to know what type of //c motherboard
I have (the one with the expansion slot vs. the one with the CPU/MMU
held in place by sockets vs. the one with the CPU/MMU soldered to the
motherboard; I have the second type). My question is - if the free
//c upgrade involves a motherboard swap, which of the three board
types will I end up with?
4. Boca Research sells a 14.4kb external modem that I can buy from
Global Horizons for <$200 (new - such a deal!). Does anyone know
if ProTerm 3.1 can drive this modem (I need something that can
go at least at 9600 bps)...

Thanks in advance....
