Fix Font Manager?
I'm having trouble which I'm sure the FixFontMgr601 PIF is supposed to
fix, but it isn't doing it. I try to open a teach file, namely the docs
to "MiscLibrary" which have been coming on the GS+ disks for a while, and
the system freezes up.
This happens both from EgoEd and ShadowWrite. I have PointLess and
HardPressed both running. When I open the file directly I get two cursor
signals that HardPressed is uncompressing a TrueType file. The third time
the wait cursor comes up everything freezes solid. If I open another file
first, one which uses the Geneva font, then try to open the teach file, I
get only one cursor signal of uncompression before the thing freezes, so
it's pretty certain things are going wrong with the font loading.
According to the docs on FixFontMgr601 this is a bug in System 6.0.1, it
freezes solid if it can't find a font it's trying to load.
I've checked the Finder info to make sure the PIF isn't inactive, and
I've resorted that directory to put it near the top of the list of inits,
to no effect. Any idea what's going wrong?
I can't even figure out enough from the resource fork of the file to
know what font it's trying to load, so I can't try to put the appropriate
font file on the disk to view the contents. I can look at the data fork,
with the text there, but it's inconvenient.
I have system 6.0.1, 4.25MB, HardPressed v1.0, PointLess v2.01,
Harmonie v2.0, the most recent versions of EgoEd and ShadowWrite, a Zip
8/16, High speed SCSI with 88MB and 44MB Syquest drives. I've checked the
file sizes and modification dates on the */System/Tools files against the
disks I uploaded from ftp.apple.com, and I haven't messed up the
installation of 6.0.1.
Any ideas?
