Limerick School //gs printer

I'm having trouble interfacing my school's //gs and Panasonic KX-P1180
printer.  When it was in the school office the pair worked fine.  Now
that it is in the lab the printer ignores the signals...  Appleworks
3.0 set to "Epson fx" (this is the setting at home with my //e-panasonic,
same disks).  OA/P sets up the print routine, little graph does its
thing across the screen and pretends it printed the document, and nothing
happens at the printer.  I've tried at least SIX patch cords to no
avail.  Suggestions anyone?  P.S.  occasionally I do get a string of
letters/characters on the test page.
