The Mac is closed in the sense that it is not a machine that you can
do whatever you want with. Wait, that's not right. I mean that it
is basically a box you buy to run the latest system software from
Apple. It isn't designed to let you rip the OS out and hack away
on the hardware or make your own modifications or whatnot. Most
people do not want to do things like this, but to me it is part of
owning a computer.
The PC fares better, if you are using a vanilla "OS" like MS-DOS.
There is still a weird hazy area between well-documented hardware
and high-level APIs, though.
