I believe your main problem is you are using very old versions of ProDos.
ProDos has been at v1.8 for a long time and is now at v2.0.1.  So my
first suggestion is to switch to a current version and try that.

The second suggestion is for you to check memory and make sure things are
as they are supposed to be.  Many times I think I am doing something right
and then find out I've got stuff in the wrong place.  For example: I once
thought I was closing files correctly only to run out of buffer space.  It
turned out that I was actually putting the address of where the buffer
number was into the location.
