It DOES work, I tried it myself some decade ago...
But I think, for Pinball you need a JOYSTICK. You plug it into the same
port, but from the software side it behaves completely different. E.g.
you can read its value in BASIC with the PDL(n) function, which you can't
do with the mouse (see below)

The mouse driver is in your //c's ROMs. It includes an interface for
BASIC and for assembly language. But I suppose you don't need this
driver for running Pinball.

Well you could probably use the Apple //c Technical Reference Manual
if you wish to get a deeper understanding of your computer. But it
isn't needed absolutely, just a question of personal interest...
