I'm going to post this first, and then reply by e-mail for insurance.
The "manual" for this game is a paperback desktop encyclopedia. I don't have
the info on which one it is on hand, but I guarantee that few people are going
to want to copy a book that's about 1 1/2" thick.
Looking up words in the encyclopedia is only required for advancement, as far
as I recall (I haven't advanced my character for a while, and I haven't
created any new ones, so I don't remember if it's needed for new characters).
But I still play the game quite frequently.
