This is probably because the AE drive can be "upgraded" to a HD drive.
Since all they do is install a chip the mechanism is proably already
HD compatible. The AE HD drive, I believe, is a 1.6meg format which
isn't compatible with 1.44meg disks... correct me if I'm wrong.

Yep... also the extra tab tapes I had left over from my 5 1/4 disk
days work great on covering those HD holes. You know those stickers
for "write-enabling" 5 1/4 disks. :)
