I use my Apple IIe as a remote terminal to the mainframe from my home.
It is an enhanced IIe with an Apple color monitor and a Duodisk drive.
It has an internal 1200 baud modem that I use with the Apple Access II
terminal emulation.
But the Duodisk drive failed over the weekend, and I'm not sure why or
what steps I might take to repair it if that is possible. Normally, I
would insert a disk in the drive and switch on the machine. The drive
would read the disk and boot the machine.
Last night, I inserted a disk and turned on the IIe. The lights
flickered on the drive and a strange pattern appeared on the screen,
but the drive did not read the disk or subsequently boot the computer.
I checked the connections, but everything appeared to be in order.
One last piece of evidence: I pulled the Duodisk drive card and
replaced it with the card for an old Disk II drive and was successful
in booting the machine from the Disk II drive. This appears to confirm
that the problem is in the duodisk drive. I switched back and got the
same result I had before. The lights flickered, but the drive did not
spin or read the disk.
That's all I had the time to do last night. I'm looking for
suggestions on what to try next. The Duodisk is very convenient, and
I'd like to get it operating again.
