Thanx for all the help, but I wired the connector up backwards (ie pin 7
is still pin 7 but 1 went to 13 and 3 went to 11).  But I found that:
1) Gwbasic (or any basic) is fine for programming
2) use the command OPEN "com1:110,e,7,1,RS,CD0, DT0" etc, the CD0 and DT0
   stuff tells basic not to expect any hardware hand shaking.
3) Pin 3 on the PC is the receive line
