I have seen the black screen with TWGS failure many, many times.  It has
mostly to do with temperature.  Living in Southern California, I would get
that screen about once a week.  Up here in the Bay Area, I never got the 
message during the Winter months, but I am beginning to get that screen
about once a month.  Nowadays, I just leave the top off the machine and
put my System Saver GS right over the TWGS...
