I have a 5.25" floppy drive that is disfunctional. My guess
is that the drive's read/write head is not working but I'm not
sure how to go about testing it. I can get a meter, but my
electronic skills are near nill.
When I boot the machine the floppy makes 2 or 3 audiable clicks
and then just spins continuously. The drive is aproximately 10 yrs
old and came from an elementry school. It's an Ace-10 and came
with an Ace 1000.
I have software for an Ace 500 and Apple IIe that are supposed
to work on the Ace 1000. I have gotten the machine to boot up using
another drive. I've replaced the drive card and the cable that
connects the dysfunctional drive, so all I am left with is that the
problem is within the drive itself.
Could someone give me some ieas of how to pinpoint the problem?
I expect that having the unit serviced by a technician would cost
more than the worth of the machine and the unit combined. So, any
ideas of how to locate or fix the problem would be wonderful. I
do have a second drive that I can exchange parts with, but only for
testing seeing how it's my main drive on my IIe and without it I
can't do much.
