Re: Replacement GS PSU Internals

There was a thread on here about a replacement Vulcan power supply
module, that will work. It's a fairly common off the shelf part.

You need +5, +12, -5 and -12 DC.

The one in the InnerDrive had no -5, they "floated" (literally) a
regulator in midair inside the box and attached it to the -12 line.

Yup, that would have been me. The MeanWell (great name) PT-65B is what I used to restore a Vulcan GS. It should fit the stock IIGS power supply case without incident.

Available from Jameco Electronics for $29.95 + shipping.

You will have to rig up a -5V regulator, but hopefully in a bit more robust manner than what Tony describes for the InnerDrive (that's sort of scary). I used a 7905T regulator - also available from Jameco for a couple of bucks. That drops the -12V rail to -5V and provides the fourth voltage.

The MeanWell is rated at 65W (72 with forced air cooling), which should be more than enough for even the most fully-loaded IIGS!

p.s. - While it does nominally fit the Vulcan case, you end up having to unsolder a few components at the AC input end and reorient them (some on their side, one choke airborne) using some bus wire and skill. Very, very tight. This should not be a problem with the GS supply since it has more room.
