     This is what I did recently, and it works great:  The IBM has a modem
cable (RS-232, male) and the GS has a high-speed modem cable (also RS-232 M).
If you look on the back of a modem, it should have an RS-232 Female connection.
I had to mail-order my GS cable, but I'm sure a Mac cable will also work
fine.  You should probably make sure it says "High Speed" on it.

     Go to Radio Shack, a trade show, or wherever and get a Null-Modem
device.  It's just a small little thing, with RS-232 connection on it, too.
It should cost about $5 or so, and mine required a Gender-Changer (to make
both ends of the Null Modem female) which was another $5.00.

     Then, just plug both modem cabels into the Null Modem, and load
comm software into both machines.  I was able to get 19,200 transfer rate
to the GS, even on a 4.77MHz XT (or at least close to it).

     You mean for the transfer?  Any decent comm program.  I use ProTERM,
but in your situation even Kermit would probably work fine.

     This is getting more difficult.  First you'd have to remove all the
LF characters, and then any extra control characters that the Apple wouldn't
like.   For plain text, there are several utilities that can do this.
