Ummm...I don't know if this'll help, but I was having like 10 bad blocks when
I first got my //e Vulcan (now being used on a GS).  I contacted AE (back when
they had REAL technical support) and the guy said to load up the Vulcan software
and type  AE    I can't remember if this was right at the main menu or under
Partitoin Manager - anyway, it allows a low lever type of format that fixed
my HD problem.
