  If you are still interested in electronics, and getting your hands
dirty, there are many wonderful things you can do to an older
apple. Ive etched my own interface cards and created a digital/analog
IO system that can sample audio to almost 17,000Hz! 
You can also make an alarm system, weather station, fuel-injection
system(my next project-no kidding!) or a controller for a light-show
at Xmas or something... There are *excellent* articles in mags
in the library from the mid-late 80's when everybody and his mother
was hacking apples.
