Yeah, use less fonts. ;-) I'm 100% certain you don't use 174 fonts
on a regular basis. Maybe three or four. This is what my Fonts folder
looks like (the wonders of pipe-command in MuGS and uemacs, heh heh):

:Calvin:System:Fonts:
   2 Apple.II.09 3 Garamond.12I 1 Monaco*
   1 AvantGarde* 1 GaramondNarrow* 3 Monostrike.09
   1 Bookman* 1 Geneva* 7 More.Truetypes/
   1 Courier* 1 Helvetica* 1 NewCentSchlbk*
  29 FastFont 2 Label.06 1 NewHelvNarrow*
   1 Finder.Data 3 Lucida.10 4 NewHelvNrrw.14
   1 Font.Lists 3 Lucida.10B 8 NewHelvNrrw.24
   3 Garamond.10 4 Lucida.10BI 3 PC.MS.10
   3 Garamond.10B 3 Lucida.10I 1 Palatino*
   3 Garamond.10BI 4 Lucida.12 1 Symbol*
   3 Garamond.10I 4 Lucida.12B 1 Times*
   3 Garamond.12 4 Lucida.12BI 4 TrueType.List
   4 Garamond.12B 4 Lucida.12I 1 ZapfDingbats*
   4 Garamond.12BI 1 LucidaBright*

Filenames marked with an asterisk are my Truetypes. The rest of
pre-generated bitmaps for speed. These 13 fonts will fit on a Font menu
with minimal or no scrolling. What do you do if you want to use Times
or Zapf Dingbats on your 174-item font menu?!?!? I keep all the rest of
my fonts (almost 300 of them) in the "More.Truetypes", split into five
folders by name. I actually only really use four fonts: Garamond
Narrow, Lucida Bright, Avant Garde and New Helvetica Narrow.
