It's my opinion that the Apple is expensive because the clone market is 
extremely limited. There are good sides to this though. Apple knows that 
the vast majority of copies of it's software are going to be used on
their products and tend to distribute things freely. I doubt IBM could
set up an FTP site for MSDOS upgrades. For the same reason, it's fairly
easy to determine what a person has. That is, you can write for all your
customers without as much worry about compatibility as you'd get in the
msdos world. It boils down to the fact that since there are few alternatives
to genuine Apple computers the company could charge as much as we felt they
were worth without worrying about someone undercutting them. We felt (and 
most of us still do) that they were worth the asking price.
