AppleWorks "P1/P2" Proportional Fonts Options

The "Reference" manual that came with AppleWorks 3.0 is resolutely
silent on the use of those two options "Use Proportional Font #1/#2"
... it lists them and says that is what they are, but it says nothing
of what they do or how to set them up for new printers.

I've just gotten an HP 500 printer with a great proportionally spaced
font. AppleWorks does not appear capable of supporting it.

In Courier (fixed spacing), the line:

part will discuss the needs I had from which this project

takes up just less than 60 columns, and takes up about all the space
from one margin to the other.

In Times Roman (proportional spacing), the same line only gets halfway
across the page. Then AppleWorks insists on going to the next line,
so I get the left half of the page with beautiful text, and an empty
right half of the page.

The problem seems to come down to getting AppleWorks to spit out more
than 80 characters to a line. I forget if the AppleWorks file format
is even capable of that.

Can anyone tell me if they have gotten AppleWorks to work with a
proportionally spaced font? Or do I need SuperFonts?
