I've got a 70 meg HFS partition on my conner, and although writes are
slower, it's not SO slow that it's like using a 3.5 floppy or anything.  the
reason why the hfs fst is slower, i believe, is because of the directory
structure that hfs uses.  it's made so that it takes very little time to
reach any file anywhere, regardless of how far deeply it's nested (hence
Heirarchial filing system), and when you write a new file to disk, the whole
directory has to be updated.

off of a hard drive, it doesn't make too much of a difference. running off
offloppies, you can tell.
