I would recommend against soldering in the socket. Zip had
originally planned on socketing the oscillators, but after doing loads
of testing, they decided against it. The socket adds another place
for noise to creap into the system. It may work fine for you, but it
may not...

Also, it's pretty important that you get low power SRAMS, no matter
what size you get.
